SET 1 — 🔍 CAT Level

Eight teams, A through H, participated in a hockey tournament which comprised three rounds – Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals. All the eight teams participated in the Quarterfinals such that each team played exactly one match in the Quarterfinals. The winners of the Quarterfinals played in the semifinals and the winners of the semifinals played in the finals. The winner of the finals was declared the winner of the tournament.

It is known that A, E, G and H played in the semifinals and A and G played in the finals. In any match, the difference between the number of goals scored by the two teams was exactly 3.

The following table provides the total number of goals scored by each team in the tournament:

Set 1

Since B, C, D and F did not reach the semifinals, each of them played only one match, i.e., the quarterfinal.

So their quarterfinal goals were:

B = 2
C = 4
D = 1
F = 5

In every match, the goal difference is exactly 3. Since A, E, G and H won their quarterfinals, their quarterfinal goals must be 3 more than their opponent’s goals.

So possible quarterfinal scores are:

Against B: 5–2
Against C: 7–4
Against D: 4–1
Against F: 8–5

Now match these with totals:

A total = 8
E total = 7
G total = 12
H total = 10

E cannot score more than 7 in the quarterfinals, so E must have scored 7 in QF and then 0 in SF.

Thus E defeated C: 7–4.

Since A and G played the final, E must have lost to either A or G in the semifinal.
If E scored 0 in the semifinal, the winner scored 3.

A’s total is 8. So A can have:

QF = 5
SF = 3
Final = 0

Therefore A defeated B in QF: 5–2
A defeated E in SF: 3–0

Now remaining teams are G and H.

G and H must have defeated D and F in quarterfinals.

G total = 12 and H total = 10.

The only possible arrangement is:

G defeated D: 4–1
H defeated F: 8–5

Then semifinal:

G defeated H: 5–2

Final:

G defeated A: 3–0

Final arrangement:

Quarterfinals:
A beat B: 5–2
E beat C: 7–4
G beat D: 4–1
H beat F: 8–5

Semifinals:
A beat E: 3–0
G beat H: 5–2

Final:
G beat A: 3–0

  1. B played against A in the quarterfinals.
    Answer: C. A

  1. Goals scored by finalists in semifinals = A scored 3 and G scored 5.
    Answer: 8

  2. Highest goals in quarterfinals = H scored 8.
    Answer: D. H

  3. If A’s semifinal was the third match of the tournament, then A and E’s quarterfinals must have happened before it. So the second match could have involved E.
    Answer: A. E
