SET 1 — 🔍 CAT Level

Before going on an Indian space mission, four astronauts—Akash, Bharat, Chinmay, and Dev—cleared a series of four rigorous tests to ensure that they are physically and mentally prepared for the extreme conditions of space. These tests are: Medical, Psychological, Endurance, and Simulation and Skills. Together, these four tests help ensure astronaut safety and mission success. All scores are integers, with the maximum score for each test being 100. None of the astronauts scored the maximum in any test, and the minimum score obtained is 70. Some of the scores obtained by them are given in the table below, while some are missing.

During the examination process, each school sends its students to exactly two other schools and hosts students from exactly two schools. The total capacity of a school to conduct examinations is equal to the total number of students it sends to other schools. Students are transferred only in complete batches, and no batch is split across schools.

It is also known that:

(i) The total score obtained by Akash across all four tests is 340.

(ii) The scores obtained by Akash, Bharat, Chinmay, and Dev in the Psychological test are in an arithmetic progression, in that order.

(iii) The lowest score in the Endurance test is 80, while the average score in this test is 86.

(iv) Chinmay’s total score is 20 marks less than Akash’s total score. Bharat and Dev have the same overall total score.

(v) Bharat’s score in the Medical test is 5 marks more than his score in the Endurance test.

Set 1

From condition (ii):

Psychological scores of Akash, Bharat, Chinmay, Dev are in AP.

Bharat = 78 and Dev = 90.

So, the AP is:

Akash = 72, Bharat = 78, Chinmay = 84, Dev = 90

Akash’s Missing Score

Akash total = 340

Akash has:

Medical = 85
Psychological = 72
Endurance = 92
Simulation = ?

So,

85 + 72 + 92 + Simulation = 340

Simulation = 340 − 249 = 91

So, Akash’s Simulation score = 91

Chinmay’s Missing Score

Chinmay’s total is 20 less than Akash.

So,

Chinmay total = 340 − 20 = 320

Chinmay has:

Medical = 70
Psychological = 84
Endurance = 80
Simulation = ?

So,

70 + 84 + 80 + Simulation = 320

Simulation = 320 − 234 = 86

So, Chinmay’s Simulation score = 86

Bharat’s Medical Score

Let Bharat’s Endurance score be x.

Given:

Bharat’s Medical score is 5 more than his Endurance score.

So,

Bharat Medical = x + 5

Lowest Endurance score is 80, and Chinmay already has 80.

So Bharat’s Endurance must be more than 80.

Since no one scored 100, Bharat Medical cannot be 100.

Therefore:

x + 5 < 100
x < 95

Also, x > 80

So Bharat Endurance can be 81 to 94

Bharat Medical can be 86 to 99

From the options:

85, 87, 89, 95

Only 85 cannot be Bharat’s Medical score.

Answer = 85

Psychological Total

Psychological scores are:

Akash = 72
Bharat = 78
Chinmay = 84
Dev = 90

Total = 72 + 78 + 84 + 90 = 324

Definitely False Statement

Option 2 says:

“The lowest score obtained by Dev in any test is 70.”

Dev already has:

Psychological = 90
Simulation = 76

So Dev’s lowest known score is at least 76 or lower only if his Medical/Endurance is below 76.

But the minimum score in the entire data is 70, and Chinmay already has 70 in Medical.

Since “the minimum score obtained is 70” does not mean Dev must have 70.

Also, Dev’s Simulation is already 76, and there is no definite reason for Dev to have 70.

So this statement is definitely false.

Final Answers

  1. Chinmay’s Simulation and Skills score = 86

  2. Bharat’s Medical score cannot be = 85

  3. Total Psychological score = 324

  4. Definitely false statement = Option 2
