SET 1 — 🔍 CAT Level - CAT 2025

❝

A round table has seven chairs around it. The chairs are numbered 1 through 7 in a clockwise direction. Four friends, Aslam, Bashir, Chhavi, and Davies, sit on four of the chairs. In the starting position, Aslam and Chhavi are sitting next to each other, while for Bashir as well as Davies, there are empty chairs on either side of the chairs that they are sitting on.

The friends take turns moving either clockwise or counterclockwise from their chair. The friend who has to move in a turn occupies the first empty chair in whichever direction(s) he/she chooses to move.

Aslam moves first (Turn 1), followed by Bashir, Chhavi, and Davies (Turns 2, 3, and 4 respectively). Then Aslam moves again followed by Bashir, Chhavi, and Davies (Turns 5, 6, 7, and 8 respectively).

The following information is known:

  1. The four friends occupy adjacent chairs only at the end of Turn 2 and Turn 6.

  2. Bashir occupies Chair 4 and Chhavi occupies Chair 7 after Turn 2.

Set 1

Given conditions

Chairs are numbered 1 to 7 clockwise.
Friends: Aslam, Bashir, Chhavi, Davies.
Initial condition: Aslam and Chhavi sit next to each other.
For Bashir and Davies, both neighbouring chairs are empty.

Also given:

  1. The four friends occupy adjacent chairs only at the end of Turn 2 and Turn 6.

  2. Davies occupies Chair 2 after Turn 1 and Chair 4 after Turn 5, and Chhavi occupies Chair 7 after Turn 2.

Since Davies does not move in Turn 1, Davies must have been on Chair 2 initially.

Initial arrangement

To satisfy all starting conditions:

  • Davies is on 2

  • Bashir must have empty chairs on both sides

  • Aslam and Chhavi must be adjacent

  • Chhavi must be on 7 after Turn 2, and Chhavi has not moved yet by Turn 2

So Chhavi is initially on 7.
Aslam must be adjacent to Chhavi, so Aslam is on 6 or 1.
If Aslam is on 1, Davies on 2 will not have empty chairs on both sides. So Aslam is on 6.
Then Bashir must be on 4.

Initial arrangement:

Chair 2 → Davies
Chair 4 → Bashir
Chair 6 → Aslam
Chair 7 → Chhavi

Turn-wise movement

Initial:
1 empty, 2 Davies, 3 empty, 4 Bashir, 5 empty, 6 Aslam, 7 Chhavi

Turn 1: Aslam moves
Aslam from Chair 6 moves clockwise to first empty chair: Chair 1.
Now occupied: 1, 2, 4, 7

Turn 2: Bashir moves
Bashir from Chair 4 moves counterclockwise to first empty chair: Chair 3.
Now occupied: 1, 2, 3, 7
These are adjacent in circular order: 7, 1, 2, 3.
This satisfies the condition that all four are adjacent at the end of Turn 2.

Turn 3: Chhavi moves
Chhavi from Chair 7 moves counterclockwise to first empty chair: Chair 6.
Now occupied: 1, 2, 3, 6
Chair 4 is empty.

So, at the end of Turn 3, no one sits on Chair 4.

Turn 4: Davies moves
Davies from Chair 2 moves clockwise to first empty chair: Chair 4.
Now occupied: 1, 3, 4, 6

Turn 5: Aslam moves
Aslam from Chair 1 moves counterclockwise to first empty chair: Chair 7.
Now Davies is still on Chair 4, as required.
Occupied: 3, 4, 6, 7

Turn 6: Bashir moves
Bashir from Chair 3 moves clockwise to first empty chair: Chair 5.
Occupied: 4, 5, 6, 7
These are four adjacent chairs, satisfying the condition for Turn 6.

Turn 7: Chhavi moves
Chhavi from Chair 6 can move to Chair 1 or Chair 3 depending on direction.
Bashir is on Chair 5. Adjacent chairs to Bashir are 4 and 6.
Chair 4 has Davies and Chair 6 becomes empty after Chhavi moves.
So only Davies sits adjacent to Bashir.
